Beginner's Mind
2025
The solo show features an installation of 108 paintings on Indian cotton paper, a video, and two maps. Vaz brings to life his trek across the Himalayas, inspired by his dear friend, artist Rui Calçada Bastos who completed the path 30 years before him.
Tracing Rui’s steps proved to be challenging as, over the years, human development obstructed the original trail. Vaz’s paintings of Ladakh’s surrounding peaks—Saser Kangri (25,171 ft) and Nun (23,409 ft) and his video transmission of the ancient traditions that have adapted and take new form around human development, tell an anthropogenic story in an ancient land.
