Pentimento

2015/16

Pentimento is a screen of 4.5 by 1.5 meters installed at Botanical Garden, from October 2015 to November 2016 in Coimbra, Portugal, as part of AnozeroBienal de Arte Contemorânea de Coimbra, Portugal. The initial intention for this work was that of a painting that pursued the evolution of nature on the canvas. To paint according to the seasons of the year and the changes in light, color, and the different depths of vision. The aim was focused on the literalness of the wooden plywood and how to attach these different layers of the the appearance of nature on to the surface. By exposure of the wooden plaque outdoors generated the imprinting effects of the surrounding space and therefore exposing sensitive qualities. As an alternative to the pictorial overlays initially made, Pedro Vaz decided to repeat the application of a gypsum-based acrylic preparation. Canvas preparations over canvas preparations optimized it for exposure to nature, which spontaneously performed its own painting reflecting the passage of time: pollens, rain, sun. This application was reconfiguring not just the fixation of nature on the screen, but the fixation that the environment generated directly on it, without any human interference.
