Transect
2023
Can you hear yourself crunching underfoot? Revealing your position to the observant forest? What eyes lie beyond the visible?
A transect is an instrument similar to a long tape measure used by geologists to measure landscape by establishing straight lines through the environment. These are used in order to observe, measure, and record data in specific areas. In the work of Pedro Vaz, the observer and the observed are reversed through his paintings, films, and installations. The transect in Vaz’s works create linear paths through the forest which become interrupted and impossible due to nature’s own non-linearity. The subject rejects definition.
