Place and shape

Pedro Vaz, 2006

The landscape, perceived as being the material result of all natural and social processes that occur in a specific place, to me, its forms are like a synthesis of all the functional elements of those processes.

The landscape functions as a tool, as a medium, for my own exercise or practice of painting. But the topic “Landscape,” the natural landscape, is much more than that, it’s a source of inspiration. It encompasses all the magic that is underlying something unknown to us, integrates the need to search and explore a path not knowing where it will lead, always expecting to find an intact place, that man hasn’t reached, a primordial place where everything begins.

There are two moments inherent to the work, which result from the interdependency between themes, such as:

1 – Shape, immediate, “the organic character of physical matter”*, of “painting’s corporality”*, of existence. There is no greater attestation to existence than the actual matter of the works, the permanent cause of all our sensations, through the empathy created in the relationship with the subject, in this case the spectator. Looking for formal diversity, creating and recreating always through a guiding line, mutating the assumption.

2 – Place, is the source of inspiration, the need to search for a place, not knowing if it exists, natural, virgin, where man may be at balance with himself. It’s Nature, whose figuration became mysterious, but the need to recreate that place is instantly formed by the Artist himself. “The dialogue with nature is a condition for the artist. The artist is a human being, he is nature and a part of nature, in nature’s space.”**

There is an “indifference regarding the traditional contours of figuration and abstraction”, thus I oscillate between one field and the other without fixating in any, questioning the representation, simulating the figurative Nature, but with a strong tendency towards abstractionism, not wanting to make the landscape unrecognizable. Color is used sometimes, in an anti-natural sense, intuitive as to aid the abstraction and regularize, or not, the chromatic intensities.

The deconstruction of the image not only aims to question the representation, but also, with the intention of creating forms that aren’t familiar, that don’t strike us or immobilize us. The abstraction only swipes parts of the figure, but maintains some of its important aspects.

“Maybe nature’s greatness in relation to man, only renders him incapable of understanding it.” 1. Maybe here lies the explanation of why man disrespects the values established by Nature – it’s also inevitable for me, as has always been the case for humanity. My own attitude, on the other hand, is nothing but another way of measuring forces against Nature, measuring myself. This attitude has to do with the appropriation of raw matter, which allows me to recreate once more the environment, this time with a different purpose: not only as an act of artistic creation, but also, a political act. Thus, it’s a creative process that appropriates Nature, which transforms the landscape, catalyzed and mediated by my presence in society.

In practice, my creative process is a fusion of two processes: figurative, through the representation, by means of a figure (photograph), delineate, assume, imagine drawing and, on a second level, to make the figurative representation abstract, rendering it informal through its own registration, always exploring the asymmetry, the chromatic game and the articulation between lines in a geometric equilibrium, valuing the importance of composition.

Forma e Lugar

Pedro Vaz, 2006
